On popular demand, I'm sharing the recipe for my natural sunscreen.

Ingredients

30g coconut oil
23g shea butter
3g jojoba, sesame, or sunflower oil
3g Vitamin E oil (optional)
Cosmetic grade zinc oxide powder – this will be your UV protection
25 drops essential oil in total (optional): I used 10 Lavender, 5 Peppermint, 10 Frankincense

(find 100% pure, therapeutic grade essential oils here)

Preparation

Add coconut oil, shea butter, and jojoba/sesame/sunflower oil to a water bath to melt and mix.

Put on a mask that covers your nose and mouth to avoid breathing in the fine particles of zinc oxide powder. Measure out your zinc oxide according to your needs:

2-5 SPF: 5% zinc oxide
6-11 SPF: 10% zinc oxide
12-19 SPF: 15% zinc oxide
20+ SPF: 20% zinc oxide

Above applicable to the total weight of the other ingredients.

Example: if would like to have a 20+ SPF sunscreen, calculate the necessary amount of zinc oxide as per the following:

30g coconut oil + 23 g shea butter + 3g jojoba oil + 3g Vitamin E oil = 59g, I round it up to 60g to include the essential oils and for easier calculation.

The 20% of 60g is 12g, so I have to use 12g zinc oxide.

Add zinc oxide, Vitamin E oil, and optional essential oils to the other ingredients. Stir well to combine.
Store in a dark jar in the refrigerator up to 6 months.

Use

Apply generously to exposed skin and reapply every few hours, or more often if swimming.

Safety

Do not leave the lotion in direct sunlight, keep it refrigerated when not used.
Do not stay in direct sunlight around midday.
Wear sunglasses and a wide brimmed hat if possible when in direct sun.
Use only therapeutic grade essential oils, lower quality or adulterated oils can damage your health.
Do not use photosensitive essential oils in your recipe (eg. Citrus oils).
